Xbox Game Pass has been renamed, merged and restructured more than once since it launched in June 2017, and the most recent overhaul, in October 2025, replaced the old Core and Standard plans with new names. If you own an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, the tier you choose decides whether you can play online, how large a library you get and whether Microsoft’s new games arrive in your subscription on launch day. This guide explains the current console tiers as of October 2026, what each includes, how the library rotates and what happens when you cancel.

The Three Console Tiers at a Glance

Microsoft’s Game Pass page currently lists three plans that include console play: Essential, Premium and Ultimate. A fourth plan, PC Game Pass, is PC-only and does not include console play, so it is not covered here.

Library sizes are Microsoft’s own “plus” figures and change constantly. Prices differ by region and have moved up and down since 2025, so check the Microsoft Store in your country before subscribing.

How the Tiers Got Here

It helps to know the history, because older guides and forum posts still use retired names:

  • Xbox Live Gold was for many years the paid membership needed for online console multiplayer.
  • In September 2023, Gold was replaced by Game Pass Core, which kept online play and added a small library.
  • In 2024 Microsoft introduced Game Pass Standard, a middle tier with a larger library but no day-one releases.
  • In October 2025, Core was renamed Essential, Standard became Premium, and Ultimate kept its name. Existing subscribers were moved across automatically.
  • In April 2026, Microsoft announced that future Call of Duty releases would no longer join Game Pass on day one, arriving instead around a year later.

Our history of Xbox console generations covers how Xbox Live and Game Pass fit into Microsoft’s wider strategy.

Game Pass Essential

Essential is the entry point and the direct descendant of Xbox Live Gold.

Online multiplayer

On Xbox consoles, most paid games require a Game Pass membership for online multiplayer, and every console tier includes it. Free-to-play games do not require a membership for online play on Xbox.

A starter library

Essential includes a curated library that Microsoft describes as 50+ games, playable on console and on other supported devices. It does not include new releases on day one; the library is made up of established titles.

Who it suits

Essential suits players who mainly buy their games and need a membership for online play, or who play one or two online games with friends.

Game Pass Premium

Premium sits in the middle and is built around a much larger library.

  • A library of 200+ games on console, PC and other supported devices.
  • New Xbox-published games join the Premium library within one year of launch, according to Microsoft’s Game Pass page. Premium does not include new games on release day.
  • Online console multiplayer and in-game benefits, as in Essential.

Premium suits players who enjoy working through a big back catalog and are happy to wait for Microsoft’s newest titles.

Game Pass Ultimate

Ultimate is the top tier and the only one that brings new releases into the subscription at launch.

Day-one releases

Select new games, including many from Microsoft’s own studios, arrive in Ultimate on their release day. Microsoft’s footnote states that this excludes Call of Duty titles, reflecting the April 2026 change. Many third-party games also launch into Ultimate on day one. Which games qualify is decided case by case, so it is worth checking a specific title’s listing.

Partner libraries

  • EA Play: a library of Electronic Arts games plus trials of selected new EA releases and member discounts on EA content.
  • Ubisoft+ Classics: a selection of Ubisoft titles.
  • Fortnite Crew: Epic’s monthly Fortnite subscription, added to Ultimate in November 2025.

Library size and extras

Ultimate has the largest library, listed at 500+ games, the most cloud gaming playtime of the console tiers and the highest Microsoft Rewards multiplier. It is designed for players who want new releases and the widest possible selection.

A Brief Note on Cloud Gaming

All three console tiers now include some cloud gaming, which lets you play selected games by streaming them instead of installing them. Microsoft sets a monthly cloud playtime allowance that increases with each tier. For console owners, the most useful part is being able to try a game instantly before committing storage space to it. The core of each tier, however, is still the downloadable library played locally on your Xbox.

How the Library Rotates

Game Pass is a rotating library, not a permanent collection. A few rules of thumb:

  • Microsoft’s own first-party games generally stay in the library once added.
  • Third-party games are licensed for a period and eventually leave. Removals are typically flagged in a “Leaving soon” section of the Game Pass area on console and in the Xbox app, usually a couple of weeks ahead.
  • Games arrive in waves, and Microsoft publishes regular announcements on Xbox Wire about what is joining.
  • Availability varies by region, tier and platform, as Microsoft notes on its Game Pass page.

Buying a game before it leaves

Members can usually buy games in the library at a discount while they remain in Game Pass. If you are partway through a game that is about to leave, buying it keeps it playable, and your progress carries on because your saves are stored in your Xbox account rather than tied to the subscription.

What Happens When You Cancel or Change Tiers

  • Library games lock. Games you downloaded through Game Pass stay installed but cannot be launched until you subscribe again at a tier that includes them.
  • Purchases are kept. Games and add-ons you bought, including those bought at member discounts, remain yours.
  • Saves and Achievements stay. Xbox cloud saves and Achievements belong to your account and do not depend on a subscription.
  • Online multiplayer stops for paid games until you resubscribe, though free-to-play games remain playable online.
  • Downgrading from Ultimate removes day-one access and partner libraries such as EA Play, and games outside the lower tier’s library lock.
  • Billing: Microsoft’s page notes that you stop recurring charges by cancelling in your Microsoft account before the next billing date, and it describes a refund option if you cancel within 30 days after a payment. Terms can vary by region, so check your account page.

Choosing the Right Tier

  • “I just want to play online with friends.” Essential.
  • “I want lots of games to try, and I don’t mind waiting a while for new Xbox releases.” Premium.
  • “I want Microsoft’s new games the day they come out, plus EA Play.” Ultimate.
  • “I only play offline single-player games I buy.” You may not need Game Pass at all.

If you also own a PlayStation, our guide to PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra and Premium explains how Sony structures its tiers differently; note that the names “Essential” and “Premium” mean different things on each platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can everyone in my household use my Game Pass?

On the console you set as your Home Xbox, other profiles can generally play the Game Pass games you have access to and use your online multiplayer benefit. Away from your Home Xbox, the benefits follow only your own profile when you sign in. You can change your Home Xbox in the console settings, though Microsoft limits how often.

Does Game Pass work on Xbox One?

Yes, Game Pass tiers can be used on Xbox One consoles, but many newer games are built only for Xbox Series X|S, so an Xbox One sees a smaller part of the library. The game listings on console show which devices each title supports.

Do I need to be online to play Game Pass games?

You need an internet connection to download games and to verify your membership. Single-player games can then be played offline for a period, but the console needs to reconnect periodically to confirm the subscription is still active. Setting the console as your Home Xbox helps with offline play.

Are Game Pass versions different from bought versions?

No. The game is the same build, so if you later buy it, you do not need to download it again, and your progress and Achievements continue.

Does Game Pass affect Smart Delivery or backward compatibility?

No. Smart Delivery and backward compatibility are console features that work for purchased games regardless of subscription. Game Pass simply adds more games to play.

Common Mistakes

  • Using old tier names. Core and Standard no longer exist under those names; Gold ended in 2023.
  • Assuming every new game arrives on day one. Day-one access is an Ultimate benefit, limited to select titles, and excludes Call of Duty since the 2026 change.
  • Forgetting the “Leaving soon” list. Check it before starting a long third-party game.
  • Thinking cancelled games disappear. They remain installed but locked, and your saves are safe.
