PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra and Premium Explained
What PS Plus Essential, Extra and Premium each include on PS5 and PS4: online play, monthly games, Game Catalog, Classics, trials, streaming and cloud saves.
PlayStation Plus is no longer a single subscription. Since Sony merged it with its former PlayStation Now streaming service in 2022, it has come in three main tiers: Essential, Extra and Premium. Each higher tier contains everything from the tier below plus additional benefits. For PS5 and PS4 owners, that structure decides some very practical things: whether you can play online, whether you get access to a library of downloadable games, and whether you can play older PlayStation titles on a current console. This guide explains each benefit as a console feature, which tier it belongs to and the fine print worth knowing.
A Quick Overview of the Three Tiers
According to Sony’s PlayStation Plus page, the tiers break down as follows. Catalog contents rotate over time, and some benefits vary by country.

Prices differ by region and have changed several times, so we do not list them here. Check the PlayStation Store in your country for current pricing and plan lengths.
PlayStation Plus Essential: The Core Online Membership
Essential is the entry tier and the direct continuation of the original PlayStation Plus that launched in 2010. For most players it does three important jobs.
Online multiplayer
On PS5 and PS4, most paid games require a PlayStation Plus membership for online multiplayer. This requirement began with the PS4 generation; online play had been free on PS3. Free-to-play games generally do not need a membership for their online modes, and neither do single-player games that only connect for updates.
Monthly Games
Each month Sony offers a small selection of games that members can add to their library at no extra cost. Once you claim a game, it stays in your library, but you can only play it while you have an active PlayStation Plus membership. If your membership lapses, the games are locked; resubscribe and they become playable again. The practical tip: claim every month’s games even if you do not plan to play them yet, because once a month passes those specific games can no longer be added.
Cloud storage for saves
Sony’s support pages list 100GB of online storage for PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles in all tiers. On PS5, saves can sync automatically, which makes it easy to continue on a second console or restore progress after a console replacement. PS4 is limited to 1,000 save files in the cloud.
Share Play, discounts and extras
Share Play lets you share your screen with a friend in a party and even hand over the controller virtually, so a friend can try a game you own. Members also get access to member-only sale prices on the PlayStation Store and occasional exclusive content such as in-game items for popular free-to-play games.
PlayStation Plus Extra: Adding the Game Catalog
Extra includes everything in Essential and adds the Game Catalog, a library of PS5 and PS4 games that you can download and play for as long as they remain in the catalog and your membership stays at Extra or higher.
How the Game Catalog works
- Games are downloaded, not streamed, so they run at full local quality and can be played offline as long as your membership is valid.
- The catalog rotates. New games arrive regularly, and some leave. Sony usually signals upcoming departures in the PlayStation Store and on its blog, which gives you time to finish a game.
- If you buy a game you were playing through the catalog, your saves carry over because the game data is the same.
- Sony notes on its PS Plus page that, from January 2026, PS4 games are added to the Game Catalog and Monthly Games only intermittently, reflecting the shift to PS5.
Extra also includes Ubisoft+ Classics, a selection of Ubisoft titles that appears within the catalog.
Who Extra suits
Extra is aimed at players who like to try many games and are comfortable with a rotating selection. If you mostly play one or two online games and buy new releases, Essential may be enough; if you want a wide back catalog to sample, Extra is usually the tier people mean when they talk about a PlayStation “games subscription.”
PlayStation Plus Premium: Classics, Trials and Streaming
Premium includes everything in Extra and adds four further benefits.
Classics Catalog
The Classics Catalog is the only official way to play many games from earlier PlayStation generations on a PS5. It includes selected titles from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP, which run through emulation and can be downloaded, plus remasters of older titles. Selected PS3 games are also available, but only through cloud streaming, because PS5 hardware cannot run PS3 software natively. Our PlayStation generations overview explains why each generation’s architecture made compatibility harder or easier.
Game Trials
Game Trials let Premium members play selected full games for a limited time before buying. Progress from a trial can carry over if you then purchase the game, so a trial is a practical way to test whether a game runs and plays the way you want on your setup.
Cloud Streaming
Premium adds Cloud Streaming, which lets you stream supported games instead of downloading them. On PS5, this includes supported PS5 titles from the Game Catalog and Classics, as well as selected digital games you own. Sony lists a minimum connection speed of 5Mbps, rising to 15Mbps for 1080p, and notes that streaming availability excludes some territories.
Sony Pictures Catalog
In supported regions, Premium also includes a rotating selection of films from Sony Pictures, available to watch on demand within the PlayStation app ecosystem.
Regional variations
Because cloud streaming is not available everywhere, the exact Premium package differs by market. In some regions without streaming, Sony has offered a top tier with the downloadable Classics benefit but without cloud streaming. Always check the PlayStation Plus page for your own country before subscribing.
What Happens When You Upgrade, Downgrade or Cancel
- Upgrading mid-membership gives you immediate access to the higher tier’s benefits. The PlayStation Store calculates the cost for the remaining time.
- Downgrading usually takes effect at the next renewal. Once it does, Game Catalog and Classics games you downloaded under the higher tier can no longer be played.
- Cancelling auto-renewal keeps your benefits until the end of the paid period. After that, Monthly Games and Catalog games lock, but anything you bought (including at member discounts) remains yours.
- Cloud saves are tied to your account, but uploading new saves requires an active membership. Before letting a membership lapse, it is sensible to download any cloud saves you might need to the console.
Choosing a Tier: Practical Scenarios
- You mainly play one online game with friends: Essential covers online play, cloud saves and the monthly games.
- You enjoy sampling lots of games or catching up on recent hits: Extra’s Game Catalog adds the most value.
- You want older PlayStation games on PS5 or like trying before buying: Premium adds the Classics Catalog and Game Trials.
- You have a fast connection and limited storage: Premium’s streaming lets you play some games without installing them.
- You only play offline single-player games you buy: You may not need a membership at all, though cloud backups are a useful safety net.
Common Mistakes and Misunderstandings
- Assuming monthly games are yours forever. They remain in your library, but playing them requires an active membership.
- Forgetting to claim monthly games. If you do not add a game during its month, you cannot add it later through PS Plus.
- Expecting PS3 discs to work with Premium. Premium’s PS3 titles are streamed digital versions; the PS5 still cannot read PS3 discs.
- Confusing Extra and Premium. Extra already includes the large downloadable Game Catalog. Premium is about classics, trials and streaming.
- Assuming everything is the same in every country. Streaming, film catalogs and individual games differ by region.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can other people on my PS5 use my membership?
Yes, within limits. If Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on your PS5 (the console you use as your main one), other users who sign in on that console can generally use your PlayStation Plus benefits, including online multiplayer and games downloaded from the catalog. Benefits do not follow other people to their own consoles.
Does PlayStation Plus work on PS4?
Yes. All three tiers are available on PS4, and PS4 games appear in Monthly Games and the Game Catalog, though Sony now adds them less often. Some benefits, such as streaming PS5 games, naturally only apply on a PS5.
Do I need PlayStation Plus for Remote Play or system updates?
No. Remote Play from your own console, system updates, the PlayStation Store, Trophies and single-player gaming all work without a membership.
Is the Classics Catalog the same as backward compatibility?
No. PS4 games run on PS5 natively without any subscription. The Classics Catalog is a separate, curated set of older-generation games offered through Premium.
